How can I make a link on a mobile website open an app? by @nathanael_smith

Answer by Nate Smith:

The type of links you are looking to create are known as Deeplinks.

Richard and Daniel covered Twitter and Facebook really well but it’s important to note that there are other apps besides Facebook and Twitter that have enabled deeplinking that can be linked to from your mobile site. Apps like Yelp, Foursquare, Instagram, Airbnb and Youtube to name a few have all enabled custom URI schemes and thus can be opened using non-http links like airbnb://

When you want to send a user into a mobile app but want to be able to fallback to the browser if a user doesn't have the app installed or is browsing on a desktop you can use a deeplink generator like URX links.

Movable Ink also provides great resources and insights into the deeplink space. Quoting them from one of their blog posts they write

The beauty of deep linking is that it eliminates extra clicks, brings content closer to consumers, and enables people to more easily take the actions they intend on taking. This eliminates friction from the process of taking action (for example, launching and using a mobile app), resulting in more people actually taking the action that you’d like them to.

Disclosure: I currently work as a product designer at URX.
